Coach Kalani Sitake-- Utah's UTES New Defensive Coordinator

[Coach Kalani Sitake accepting his new position as Defensive Coordinator for the Utah UTES]
It is another beautiful day in the neighborhood waking up to more positive media coverage on Tongans! It's so long overdue!
Kalani Sitake has just been named the University of Utah's new Defensive Coordinator for the undefeated UTES football team! The first Tongan to ever hold such a position in collegiate/professional football! So very deserving for such an awesome and humble man!
Congratulations Kalani, we all love you!!!
Utah football coach Kyle Whittingham announced Sunday he is promoting inside linebackers coach Kalani Sitake to defensive coordinator, replacing Gary Andersen, who is leaving the Utes to become the head coach at Utah State.
Andersen will continue to coach the Utes' defense through their bowl game, when they face Alabama in the Sugar Bowl at New Orleans on Jan. 2. Read more here...

Congratulations Utah UTES!

[UTES RB Matt Asiata charging right through BYU and yes, he is reppin' a HYPE Wristband]
Congratulations to the Utah UTES who went on to beat BYU this past weekend 48-24 ending with a 12-0 Season! Gotta love it!!!
Okay...I must admit I don't really watch football, in fact, I am not really into sports (with the exception of reading Seti's blog...lol), but I am always happy to support anything Pacific Islanders excel in and athletics is one of the many fields in which we continue to do exceptionally well and so I am being supportive although I really know nothing about football!!! lol!
GO UTAH!!!!

Blood Thicker than Water... GO UTES!
It's been a wonderful morning! I woke up and read something positive in the media about brown folks...wow imagine that! lol! Check out this awesome article about my uncle Tom Sitake!

Gotta love the fierce love of a father for his son!!! Now that's more reflective of our Pacific culture than all the crazy crimes they love to highlight in the media!
UTAH UTES ALL THE WAY!!! GO UTES!!!

Sitake has been a BYU fan all of his life — as loyal as you'll find on the planet. But his son, Kalani Sitake, a former Cougar fullback, draws a paycheck from the University Utah as the Utes' linebackers coach. It's his son's job to find a way to disrupt and ground Max Hall and the Cougar offense come Saturday.Read more HERE
"It's pretty simple," Sitake said Monday as he prepared for this week and a game he calls the most dramatic in rivalry history. "My loyalties are with my son. I love my son, I support Kalani, I have his back and he can count on me, win or lose.
"I am a BYU fan, I always will be, but my son has my love, my loyalty, and I want him to succeed."

We so need some positive news...even if it's about athletes...lol!
It hasn't been a good week for Pacific Islanders here in Utah! It has been one negative thing after the other. I don't really want to go into it in my blog, but you can read more about it on my cousin Richard's BLOG!
We really need some positive news even if it is about football players! hahaha... I have nothing against football players, but I think sometimes it's portrayed as if it's the only thing that our Pacific Islander men are good at, which is far from the truth, but at this point any good media coverage is needed!
Here is a short video (by Travis Fox of the Washington Post) about Ne'emia Vitale, a young Samoan high school student from Leone High School in American Samoa who is aspiring to someday be drafted into the NFL.
I love that they focused on his work ethics and his reasons for wanting to be in the NFL, which is connected to his desires to help his family!

Cultural Appropriation or Cultural Preservation?

Good News: Pacific Islanders are on the New York Times and it wasn't anything negative! (THANK GOODNESS!!!) Yeah!!! Yeah!!! Yeah!!!

Not so good News: It's still a story that feeds into the main/popular stereotypes about Pacific Islanders...We are either 1)criminals 2)entertainers 3)athletes
Read the full article here
If anyone comes across any other articles in the mainstream news that debunks these 3 popular stereotypes, please send me the links... I dare you!!!! LOL!!!
Well "my friends" (my new favorite phrase) I guess we can't expect the mainstream media to be progressive... how depressing... however, according to Katie Couric "anyone can do the haka"!!!--- My response to Katie Couric ... "no my friend not everyone can do nor should they do the haka my friend...and no my friend I don't want to explain why...okay thanks my friend!!!" LOL!!!
