In light of the shooting that recently occurred at Kearns High School and the escalated tensions and divisions between young Pacific Islanders and young Latinos, Asaeli Matelau (President of the Pacific Islander Student Association at the University of Utah) is leading a combined coalition of Pacific Islander Students and Latino Students and other community members to speak out against this tragedy.
In this past week we have lost a young high school student due to violence and we are now losing another young student to the prison system. This doesn't just impact their immediate families but all of us who are committed to ensuring a better future for all our children!
Every lost life-- whether it’s the tragic loss of life due to death or the loss of life to imprisonment is the loss of a future leader that our communities could have cultivated and used. With the unleashing of their hounds, the gang task force and Police force, they are sure to come home with a definite increase to the already over abundance of minorities detained in the corrections system. This is our chance to unite; this is our chance to save our youth; this is our chance to recognize that our communities face similar types of oppression; this is our chance to save those we care for in manners that are meaningful to those we help and the community. Make no doubt for we are united by the margins in which we are placed and the communities in which we reside.
